When Do You Need a Brake Inspection?
Brake pad replacement is required when the friction material is 3mm thick or less, and brake discs should be replaced if they are at or below the manufacturer’s minimum safe thickness.
Regular brake checks are a key part of preventative maintenance. Here’s what to look out for:
Grinding
A grinding noise usually means the brake pads are worn down to the metal, which can damage your brake discs.
Squeaking
Brake squeal can indicate a stuck caliper or worn pads. Some pads also have wear indicators that intentionally squeak to alert you.
Pulsating Pedal
If your brake pedal pulses when applied, the discs may be warped from heat. Occasional pulsation during hard braking could be ABS, but regular pulsation needs checking.
Vehicle Pulling
If your car pulls left or right when braking, there may be a sticking hydraulic or mechanical component such as a seized caliper.
Spongy or Soft Pedal
A spongy brake pedal can indicate air in the brake lines, while a soft pedal that goes to the floor often means brake fluid issues or a potential master cylinder fault. Immediate inspection is advised.
Brake Warning Light
A warning light may indicate low brake fluid or an issue with your braking system. Modern cars may have multiple brake-related warning lights, including electronic parking brake alerts.
High Handbrake
If the handbrake lever pulls up higher than normal (usually more than 6–8 clicks), it may need adjustment. A faulty handbrake can cause your vehicle to fail the MOT.
Old Brake Fluid
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, reducing effectiveness. It should be replaced roughly every 2 years, but check your manufacturer’s guidelines.
